BYRD Conditioner Is Sold Out. What Should I Buy Instead?

If you went looking for BYRD Lightweight Conditioner and couldn't find it, you're not imagining things. It's sold out, here and on BYRD's own site.

The good news: BYRD has confirmed more is coming. We just don't know exactly when.

So until then, what should you buy instead? We went through the ingredient lists of the conditioners we carry to find the closest alternatives. There are two we'd recommend, depending on whether you want the closest match to how BYRD feels or the same $20 at checkout.

Why BYRD Is Surprisingly Hard to Replace

BYRD Lightweight Conditioner does something that sounds simple but isn't: it conditions and detangles without making your hair feel heavy.

Its formula combines conditioning agents including cetearyl alcohol, behentrimonium methosulfate and cetrimonium chloride with amodimethicone for slip and smoothing. Panthenol and hydrolyzed quinoa, rice and baobab proteins round out the formula.

And then there's the price. A 16 oz bottle of BYRD Lightweight Conditioner is $20. That's $1.25 an ounce, unusually good value for a conditioner with this kind of formula.

We couldn't find an exact replacement at that price. But we did find two good answers.

Conditioner Size Price Per ounce Conditioning base Best for
BYRD Lightweight Conditioner 16 oz $20 $1.25 Cetearyl alcohol, behentrimonium methosulfate, cetrimonium chloride, amodimethicone The original (sold out)
Patricks CDL Conditioner Lite 6.8 oz (200 mL) $25 $3.68 Cetearyl alcohol, behentrimonium methosulfate, cetrimonium chloride, silicone Closest match to BYRD's feel
Blu Atlas Conditioner 8 oz / 16 oz $20 / $32 $2.50 / $2.00 Cetearyl alcohol, stearalkonium chloride, argan and avocado oils Same price at checkout

If what you really love about BYRD is how it feels in your hair, this is where we'd go.

Of the conditioners we carry, CDL follows the closest formula philosophy to BYRD. Both use cetearyl alcohol, behentrimonium methosulfate and cetrimonium chloride as part of their conditioning base, along with silicone for smoothness and slip. CDL also includes glycerin and aloe.

More importantly, it's built to do the same kind of job: condition the hair without weighing it down.

The catch is price. At roughly $3.68 an ounce, Patricks CDL is a significant step up from BYRD's $1.25 an ounce.

Bottom line: If you're willing to spend more and want something that comes closest to the lightweight experience that made you like BYRD in the first place, this is the one we'd choose.

If you just need a good conditioner until BYRD is back and want to keep it at $20, this is the one.

Blu Atlas takes a somewhat different approach to the formula, but gets you to a similar place: softer, easier-to-manage hair without a heavy, flat mess.

Cetearyl alcohol and stearalkonium chloride do the conditioning work, while argan and avocado oils add moisture. Glycerin helps attract and retain moisture, and hydrolyzed barley protein helps support stronger-feeling hair.

It's not a formula duplicate of BYRD, and those oils make it a touch richer. If your hair is on the finer side, use a little less than you would of BYRD.

At 8 ounces for $20, you're getting half as much product for the same price. If you plan to stick with it a while, the 16 oz bottle at $32 brings it down to $2 an ounce.

Bottom line: A straightforward everyday conditioner at the same price on the receipt. The easy swap while you wait.

Will BYRD Lightweight Conditioner Come Back?

Yes. BYRD has confirmed it's coming back. We just don't have a date yet.

We carry a lot of smaller and independent grooming brands at Henkey's, and occasionally this is part of the deal. They don't have the enormous production runs and supply chains of the multinationals lining drugstore shelves. Sometimes a product takes off faster than expected, and the next run isn't ready before the last one sells through.

The other side of that: backing smaller brands means backing entrepreneurs who are building something, taking risks and making products that probably wouldn't exist otherwise. We'll take the occasional wait for that. And when BYRD is back, we'll have it.

BYRD Conditioner FAQ

Is BYRD Lightweight Conditioner discontinued?

No. It's sold out, and BYRD has confirmed it's coming back. There's no restock date yet.

Where can I buy BYRD conditioner right now?

It's sold out at Henkey's and on BYRD's own site. You may find a few bottles from third-party resellers on Amazon. If you'd rather not wait, Patricks CDL Conditioner Lite and Blu Atlas Conditioner are the two alternatives we'd use.

What conditioner is most similar to BYRD Lightweight Conditioner?

Of the conditioners we carry, Patricks CDL Conditioner Lite. It shares BYRD's conditioning base of cetearyl alcohol, behentrimonium methosulfate and cetrimonium chloride, uses silicone for slip, and is built to condition without weighing hair down. It costs more per ounce.

Is there a cheaper alternative to BYRD conditioner?

Nothing we carry matches BYRD's $1.25 an ounce. Blu Atlas Conditioner is the same $20 per bottle in the 8 oz size, and its 16 oz bottle at $32 is the best per-ounce value of the alternatives, at $2 an ounce.

Can I keep using BYRD Purifying Shampoo with a different conditioner?

Yes. Your shampoo and conditioner don't need to come from the same brand. BYRD Purifying Shampoo pairs fine with either Patricks CDL or Blu Atlas.

So, What Should You Buy?

If you're particularly attached to BYRD's lightweight feel and don't mind spending more, go with Patricks CDL Conditioner Lite.

If you simply need a good conditioner at the same price until BYRD is back, go with Blu Atlas Conditioner.

And if you're willing to wait? BYRD is coming back. We'll have it when it does.

Until then, those are the two we'd put in our own showers.
