The Best Sea Salt Sprays for Men — And What Sea Salt Spray Actually Does

There are hundreds of sea salt sprays. We carry three. Here's what they actually do, whether you need one, and which one is right for your hair.

Sea salt spray was one of the products that helped inspire Henkey's.

Someone suggested I try one years ago. Seemed simple enough. Then I went shopping.

There were hundreds of them. Different salts. Different promises. Beach waves. Volume. Texture. Surf hair. Matte finish. Some cost $10. Some cost $40. After entirely too much research for something I just wanted to spray in my hair, I finally landed on BYRD.

I loved it.

And I remember thinking: Why was that so hard?

That experience stuck with me. Because when we eventually built Henkey's, the whole idea was that shopping for grooming products shouldn't require opening 27 browser tabs and becoming an amateur cosmetic chemist.

So we don't carry 27 sea salt sprays. We carry three.

Every pick meets the Henkey's Standard: built well (smart ingredients), delivers on its promises, and confidence-boosting.

Most guys don't need "the best," they need the right match for their hair:

Tip: Start with two or three sprays. You can always add more; it's much harder to take it away.

Before we tell you which one to buy, though, it helps to understand what this stuff actually does.

What Does Sea Salt Spray Actually Do?

Think of sea salt spray as a texture product.

Freshly washed hair can be almost too clean. It's soft. Slippery. Flat. Individual strands tend to fall together rather than separating, which can make the whole thing harder to style.

A texturizing spray changes that.

Salt-based sprays are designed to add grip, separation and body, creating the rougher, more piece-y texture associated with hair after a day at the beach. That can also make hair look fuller and give other styling products something to grab onto. Healthline notes that stylists commonly recommend them for texture and volume, though exactly how a spray behaves depends heavily on the rest of the formula.

"Beach hair" is the phrase everybody uses. But honestly, that undersells the category.

Why Would You Use Sea Salt Spray?

If your hair is flat, it can add volume.

If your hair is fine or thinning, added separation and texture can help it appear fuller.

If you have waves or curls, the right spray can encourage the natural pattern already in your hair.

If your hair is so soft that pomade, clay or paste never seems to behave properly, sea salt spray can work as a pre-styler, creating a foundation before you apply your finishing product.

And if you wake up on day two with hair that doesn't need washing but definitely needs something, a few sprays can help revive it. (That's actually one of the ways I use it most.)

Is Sea Salt Spray Bad for Your Hair?

Not inherently. But this is where the formula matters.

Salt sprays have a reputation for making hair feel dry because the very qualities that create that gritty, beachy texture can also leave some hair feeling rough. Hair that's already dry may notice that more.

Alcohol makes it worse. Plenty of texture sprays use it, and it's drying. All three of our picks are alcohol-free. Beyond that, these formulas go in very different directions.

  • BYRD surrounds its texturizing ingredients with glycerin, panthenol, quinoa and baobab proteins, sunflower oil and seabuckthorn extract.
  • Brightside combines Dead Sea salt and Epsom salt with kaolin and bentonite clays and silica.

Same category. Very different products.

The Best Sea Salt Sprays for Men

A quick note about how we choose these.

This isn't a list of every sea salt spray we could find on the internet. That's exactly the problem Henkey's was created to solve.

We edit.

Every product here has already made it through our assortment process. Our job isn't to give you 17 "best" sea salt sprays and leave you to figure out which one is actually best for you.

It's to narrow the category down and explain the differences that matter.

This is the sea salt spray that started it all for me—and years later, it's still the one I'd recommend to somebody who has never used one before.

BYRD gets the balance right.

You get the grip, separation and volume you're buying a surf spray for, but the formula also includes glycerin, panthenol, hydrolyzed quinoa and baobab proteins, sunflower oil and seabuckthorn extract. BYRD says the formula is designed to recreate ocean texture while keeping hair hydrated with a healthy-looking shine.

And then there's the scent. BYRD calls it its trademark "salty coconut." It's one of those products that smells like the experience it's trying to create without making you smell like you dumped a piña colada on your head.

But versatility is why it gets our Best Overall pick.

I use BYRD after the pool. I use it after the ocean. If I don't want to shower immediately, a few sprays help my hair look like hair again instead of evidence that I was just wearing a swim cap.

Water polo players, swimmers and surfers: this is an especially good one for you.

I also still use BYRD on second-day hair when I'm about to jump on Zoom or run out of the house and don't need to fully restyle it. Spray. Work it through. Done.

Editor's Note: If you have no idea which sea salt spray to buy, start here.

How to use it: Spray through damp hair for texture, or onto dry hair to refresh second-day hair. For more styling, BYRD recommends spraying at the roots as a base underneath another product.

Best Sea Salt Spray for Volume and Thinning Hair

  • Best for: Volume and pre-styling—especially thinning, fine or flat hair
  • Finish: Matte
  • Hold: Light, with substantial grip
  • Use it: As a pre-styler when you actually want to build a hairstyle

Brightside Salt and Clay Surf Spray is the reason BYRD isn't the only salt spray I use anymore.

Because Brightside isn't really trying to do exactly the same job.

Instead of stopping with salt, the formula combines Dead Sea salt and magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) with kaolin clay, bentonite clay and silica.

That matters when you're trying to build a hairstyle rather than simply add some texture.

I have thinning hair. And this has become my go-to when I want to create volume before styling. I spray it into damp hair, work it through, then blow-dry.

The difference is easiest to describe this way:

BYRD refreshes my hair. Brightside helps me build it.

The salt creates texture. The clay and silica give the hair additional grip and substance. Then I can leave it alone for a casual textured style or finish with clay, cream or pomade depending on where I'm going.

And unlike a hair-growth treatment, none of this is changing how much hair is actually on your head. It's styling. What it can do is help the hair you do have stand up, separate and occupy more visual space.

That's exactly what I'm looking for.

Brightside co-founder Landon Strauss told me the product was conceived primarily as a pre-styler, and it's now the brand's best-selling product.

We went considerably deeper on this one in our full Brightside Salt + Clay Surf Spray review, including the weird manufacturing problem created by putting actual clay through a spray bottle.

Editor's Note: If BYRD is the one we'd hand to almost anybody, Brightside is the one we'd hand to the guy who says, "My hair is flat. Help."

How to use it: Shake the bottle. Spray a few times through damp hair, work it through with your fingers, then blow-dry while lifting at the roots. Stop there, or finish with a small amount of cream, clay or pomade.

Tribal Chimp is the simplest of our three picks.

And sometimes simple is exactly what you're looking for.

What sets it apart is what else is in the bottle: the formula includes UV protection. If you're spending the day at the beach, on the water or just outside, that makes it the one to reach for. Your hair takes sun, too.

The texture itself is lightweight and matte, with volume and definition that doesn't feel greasy or sticky.

If you want the conditioning-heavy formula and versatility of BYRD, that's where I'd spend my money. If you're trying to create serious grip and volume before styling, I'd choose Brightside.

But if you're headed outside and want easy texture without overthinking it, Tribal Chimp is the pick.

Editor's Note: Easy texture with sun protection built in.

How to use it: Spray into damp, towel-dried hair, then blow-dry, air-dry or scrunch to create the finished shape.

BYRD vs. Brightside: Which One Should You Buy?

This is probably the decision most guys actually need help making.

Choose BYRD if you want an all-purpose sea salt spray: natural texture, second-day refreshes, post-swim hair, air-drying and occasional pre-styling.

Choose Brightside if volume and styling are the priority—especially if your hair is fine, thinning or chronically flat.

I own both.

I use both.

Just for different jobs.

BYRD = refresh and texture.
Brightside = volume and styling.

That's about as complicated as the decision needs to be.

How to Use Sea Salt Spray

You don't need much.

For casual texture, spray a small amount through damp hair and work it in with your hands. Scrunch if you're trying to encourage waves. Let it air-dry for a looser result.

For more volume, concentrate some of the product near the roots and use a blow-dryer. The combination of product and airflow does considerably more than spraying your hair and hoping for the best.

For a more structured hairstyle, use your salt spray first, blow-dry the hair into roughly the shape you want, and then add a small amount of your finishing product. Clay. Paste. Cream. Pomade.

The spray builds the foundation. The finishing product determines the final look.

And start with less than you think you need. You can always add another spray. It's considerably harder to remove six sprays without putting your head under a faucet.

So, Do You Need Sea Salt Spray?

No grooming product is mandatory.

But if your complaint about your hair is some version of "it just sits there," sea salt spray is one of the easiest styling products to try.

It can add volume without immediately reaching for a heavy product. It can make freshly washed hair easier to style. It can bring yesterday's hair back to life. And it can act as the first layer underneath whatever you use for hold.

Which brings me back to why Henkey's exists. I once spent an absurd amount of time trying to choose one bottle of sea salt spray. You shouldn't have to. We've narrowed it down to three.

And if you don't want to think about it? Buy the BYRD.

Sea Salt Spray FAQ

Can you use sea salt spray every day?

You can, but pay attention to how your hair responds. Salt-based styling products can leave some hair feeling dry with frequent use, particularly if the hair is already dry. Formula and amount matter, so start conservatively—and look for an alcohol-free formula.

Do you use sea salt spray on wet or dry hair?

Both. Damp hair is great when you're building a style or blow-drying for volume. Dry hair works well for adding texture or refreshing an existing style.

Does sea salt spray make hair look thicker?

It can make hair look fuller by adding texture, separation and volume. That's a cosmetic styling effect; it doesn't increase the number or thickness of your actual hairs.

Is sea salt spray good for thinning hair?

It can be. Thinning hair often benefits visually from lift and separation because the hair isn't lying flat against the scalp. Use a light hand—you want volume without weighing the hair down. Brightside Salt + Clay is our pick for thinning hair.

What's the difference between sea salt spray and texture spray?

Sea salt spray is one type of texture spray. "Texture spray" is the broader category; different formulas can create texture with salts, polymers, starches, clays or other ingredients. If you want texture without salt, try BYRD Big Wave Matte Texture Spray.

Can you use sea salt spray with pomade or clay?

Yes. That's one of our favorite ways to use it. Apply the spray first as a pre-styler, blow-dry to create volume and shape, then use a small amount of clay, paste, cream or pomade to finish the style.

The Henkey's Standard

Great grooming doesn't add complexity; it adds confidence. Every sea salt spray above is built well, delivers on its promise, and helps you show up ready. Start with one, use a light hand, and build from there.

Still deciding? Start with the pick that matches what you want your hair to do. If you're not sure, start with BYRD, it's the safest "most guys" upgrade.
